Month of January 2012 Holidays
New Year's Day is the first day of every new calendar year. This day also always falls seven days after Christmas. Canadians like most of the world treat New Year's Day as a holiday free from work. New Year's Eve has in some ways overtaken New Year's Day in terms of celebration but there are still many festivals and events held across North America to mark this calendar date.
Eastern Orthodox Christmas is celebrated each year by serving Christmas cakes and the singing of related festive songs. The Eastern Orthodox church made use of the Julian calendar instead of the Gregorian calendar or New Calendar which explains the difference in dates.
Al Hijra is the Muslim New Year. Al Hijra is a cultural event which some Muslims partake on the first day of Muharram. According to the Islamic Calendar, Muharram is the first month of each year. There is no major religious significance attached to this calendar date. Muslims may use the day to remember the life of the Prophet Muhammad and the Hijra.
