December 21st 2012 - End of the Mayan Mesoamerican Long Count Calendar
What will happen on this date?
2012 or more specifically December 21st 2012 has been pegged as a calendar date unto which the earth may meet its demise. This 2012 phenomenon comes as a result of the ending date of the 5,125-year-old cycle in the Mesoamerican Long Count calendar. This calendar is most often associated with the Mayan culture and is now often to referred to the Mayan calendar.
When thinking of this possible outcome one cannot help but think of the hoopla surrounding the switch from 1999 to 2000 and the problems that the computer clocks may present including breaking dams, electrical grids going out, nuclear weapons self-launching and a whole host of other dramatic earth shattering events. None of that of course even happened and the date actually became a non-event beyond it being New Year's and a new millennium.
For 2012 some are postulating that the earth and the people on it may undergo some radical shift in mind and spirit while others key on potential catastrophe for humankind. So whom to believe?
Scientists, astronomers and others have studied this date long and hard and cannot find any rational explanation for why people believe it marks some tidal shift for the earth. Some doomsayers claim that the earth may meet its end from the sun via massive solar radiation, a collision with a black hole or get this - destroyed via an impact with some dark mysterious never seen rogue planet dubbed Nibiru. But scientists and other researchers cannot find any evidence for those possible outcomes.
What remains to be seen is the reaction of the earth's inhabitants as the date draws close. Will each natural disaster like the 2011 record-breaking earthquake that hit Japan be more ammo for their beliefs or will rational thought and science keep people from going crazy. It will more than likely echo the change between 1999 and 2000 - lots of skepticism, some runs on essential supplies and everyone keeping an eye on the calendar and news from around the world.
December 22nd 2012 we will know for sure!
